Centre a div using absolute positioning

For all your CSS lovers out there… there have been many times I have wanted to centre a div in the exact centre of the screen… the centre from head to toe and left to right. I have never managed to achieve this and speaking to fellow developers they have also struggled to find the answer to this. It was obviously possible as there are many website that have managed to achieve this affect and so it was only a matter of time till I really needed to do this and hunt down the answer… and today was that day.

It’s actually quite simple if you put your mind to it. Using absolute positioning you can position an element by taking it out of the document flow. Other elements in the normal flow of the document will act as though the absolute positioned element was never there.

width:970px;
height:710px;
position: absolute;
top:50%;
left: 50%;

By setting the left position to 50% it will set the div to start in the centre of the screen. By adjusting the left margin by a value half of the size of the div we are centring, we can move the entire div to the left and place it directly in the centre of the page.

width:970px;
height:710px;
position: absolute;
top:50%;
margin-top:-355px;
left: 50%;
margin-left:-485px;

and that’s it done… until the next time…

TripIt.com

I cannot remember how I stumbled upon this website but it was just in time to help me organise my trip to Northern Ireland to be best man at a good friends wedding.

It’s such a simple concept. When you book flights, train, hotel or book a table at a restaurant online you will get a confirmation email. All you do if forward this email to ‘plans@tripit.com’ and the website will organise your travel plans and put together an itinerary.

You then have one location to find all your documents and you can even share your plans with fellow travellers or family and friends.

The service is aimed at people in America and you will find there is a lack of participating companies in the UK at the moment however they have recently secured a $5.1million investment from a European company which is sure to help encourage more European companies to participate.

The website is a great tool, one to watch!

Domain Dossier

There will always be times when you need to find out information about a domain name. Most people pop along to one of the many WHOIS lookup services but I have been using a tool for a while now that goes that little bit further. The Domain Dossier hosted by CentralOps.net is a great online utility that enables you to find out all the information attached to a domain name including DNS details and network information.

CSS Formatter and Optimiser

Ensuring your CSS is well written and formatted correctly is essential to good website design. As more and more CSS is being used to style websites it’s important to optimise your CSS files.

Once I have finished a project and have made sure all the formatting is correct, I place a copy of this file (with comments) into a ‘source’ folder (example). I then run my CSS through the cleancss.com utility using the ‘High (moderate readability, smaller size)’ compression. I also strip out all the comments at this stage and then upload this file for use with the website (example).

You now have the source file with comments and good readability in case you need to go back to alter or add something at a later date. You can then run the CSS through the utility again and replace the master.css file. You end up with all your selectors and their properties in the correct order and a CSS file which is smaller in file size which will enable you to maximise your server’s resources.
